Based on the Greek myth of Peleus and Thetis (a goddess and the daughter of Neptune). Though it cannot be seen in this photo, this netsuke portrays Peleus in his bid to marry Thetis, struggling to hold on to her as she changes form in her attempt to escape. Here she is in the form of a large sea bird. While they struggle the elements raise a storm in anger to protest her capture.
